 EMERGENCY: MONKEY POPULATION IN DECLINE

A team of Costa Rican biologists recently reported that the country lost more than half of its monkey population between 1995 and 2007. Estimates of spider monkey population declines were 72%, squirrel and capuchin monkeys each 43%, and howler monkeys 65%. The losses are attributed to habitat loss due to deforestation and development. As habitats are fragmented, monkeys are forced into smaller and smaller areas. The result is reduced genetic vitality and susceptibility to disease. To restore populations, protection must increase and corridors must be created to reconnect isolated patches.
