Little Charlie’s mother grabbed the electric pole’s transformer, and she was brutally electrocuted by searing current. When she screamed, Charlie rushed to his secure place on her back. Then his own fingers, jaws, arms, legs, neck, and chest were severely burned. He passed out in pain.
Charlie’s mother died, but he was rushed to the Refugio Animales de Nosara, where he received weeks of intensive care. Several of his digits had to be amputated, but, miraculously, he survived. Today Charlie is compensating for his handicap, and he enjoys playing with other monkeys at the Refugio. He will eventually live in a secure habitat in the jungle at SIBU Sanctuary. Electrocution of monkeys and other animals on uninsulated power lines still happens regularly, but it must end! No animal should have to experience agonizing injury or death in this way. Through education and action, we can prevent the unnecessary suffering and death of the Nosara area’s precious wildlife.
